This wonderful, hard-rocking release shows Guadalcanal Diary moving away from the obvious R.E.M. influences exhibited on their first two releases. Only "Where Angels Fear to Tread" and "Winds of Change" (both excellent songs) sound like the music of their Georgia cousins. Styles explored here are surprisingly diverse. "Let the Big Wheel Roll" is a souped-up rockabilly-influenced number with nutty lyrics that make fun of junk-pop culture in general and television commercials in particular; appropriately enough, the Monkees song "For Pete's Sake" is closely referenced in the song's chorus. "3 AM" is an affectingly haunting and beautiful low-key stunner about alcoholism. Touches of funk and psychedelic-era Beatles inform the driving "Lips of Steel." "Under the Yoke" weds booming arena-rock touches to a growled vocal, wailing harmonica, and oppressive lyrics. John Lennon and Greg Lake are the obvious touchstones for the uneasy slow-tempo song about paranoia and superstition entitled "Little Birds." "Things Fall Apart" comes across as a stumbling quintuple-meter burlesque of Jethro Tull's more bombastic numbers. And the soaring "Litany" is a powerfully exuberant selection with a walloping drum beat and vibrant guitar work. This fine album is well worth purchasing

Murray Attaway - In Thrall
$10.88
In Thrall doesn't whap you over the head on first listen but, as the title suggests, seduces the listener gradually and inexorably into the universe of Murray Attaway's debut solo album. As leader of Georgia's Guadalcanal Diary, Attaway was often too eclectic a songsmith for his own (commercial) good. In Thrall teeters on the brink of this trap, then pulls back into an intense, cohesive sense of purpose by the end. Attaway's style is best captured by the near genius of "Walpurgis Night," where he takes one of those great pure-pop melodies and proceeds to throw the baroque kitchen sink at it. There's always more going on here than first meets the ear. Enthralling. — Roch Parisien
